Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch founded by Simon van der Stel in 1679, also known as the Eikestad (City of Oaks in Afrikaans) is home to more than 140 vineyards and is the second oldest town in South Africa. Stellenbosch boasts the largest concentration and variety of wine farms and wine tasting venues in the country and together form the wine making, research and viticultural hub of South Africa. Oak lined streets and a holiday atmosphere make this quiet “old world” town the perfect base for wine and culture lovers alike.

Stellenbosch showcases many examples of the Cape Dutch style architecture. Apart from the preserved examples of architecture, Stellenbosch has many national monuments including Dorp Street, museums depicting life in times gone by as well as South Africa’s oldest music school the Conservatoire.

Franschhoek

Franschhoek (French corner) is one of the oldest towns in South Africa and has a strong French history and influence as this is where the French Huguenot refugees settled in 1688. Many farms and businesses still have French names and the town’s atmosphere is uniquely French-like.

The town’s close proximity to Cape Town (45 minutes), ideal weather, architectural beauty, huge variety of culinary offerings and award winning wines make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Cape Wine-lands. Many describe Franschhoek as the “food and wine capital” of South Africa. Apart from the cozy coffee shops and sociable restaurants, the village is rich in history and offers many art galleries, craft, interior and antique shops.

Paarl

Paarl is the third oldest town in South Africa and has a considerable viticultural heritage spanning from 1687 when Governor Simon van der Stel awarded titles to the first colonial farms in the area. The name Paarl, derived from “Perel” (meaning pearl in Dutch) refers to the large pearl shaped granite rock on Paarl mountain.

Paarl offers many magnificently preserved examples of Cape Dutch and Victorian buildings situated alongside the 12km long Main Road, the longest in the country. Visit Victor Verster prison where the legendary Nelson Mandela spent the final years of his incarceration and made the famous “walk to freedom” in 1990. This also marked the beginning of the democratic rule in South Africa. Get a chance to see the bronze statue of Mandela which now stands outside the prison to commemorate this event.
