Kilimanjaro Trekking 7 Days Marangu Route

Written By Expect In Africa Safari

Marangu Route is the easiest and shortest route to Kilimanjaro’s summit.  Marangu route boasts of being the only route on Kilimanjaro with the comforts of solar-powered sleeping huts and beds at each camp. There are communal huts and each bunk has a sponge mattress and pillow. There are 60 beds at both Mandara and Kibo Huts and 120 beds at Horombo Hut. The two lower huts have got bathrooms and running water facilities while the last camp provides basic men’s and ladies’ latrines. There are common dining huts to share meals. Soft drinks, bottled water, and beer may be for sale at the huts. It’s advisable to bring small Tanzanian bills to purchase these items (prices increase with elevation). This route is usually done in 5 days, could be done in 6 days for better acclimatization. The extra day could be spent resting at Horombo or climbing to a basecamp below Kibo’s sub peak Mawenzi.

Day 1:Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport.

You will be met at the airport and transferred to a hotel that suits your budget in Arusha for dinner & overnight.  Your guide will come and brief you at the hotel in preparation for the next day’s climb.

Day 2:Arusha to Marangu Gate

After breakfast depart Arusha to Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro, register with the national park, and begin hiking by 10:30 a.m.  The rainforest here is characterised by towering Eucalyptus trees, bird life, and Colubus monkeys. At these lower elevations, it gets wet and muddy, thus gaiters and trekking poles come in quite handy. Shorts and t-shirts should be sufficient, but keep your rain gear and warmer clothing available. You will stop halfway for lunch, to reach  Mandara Huts between 2 and 3 pm. Have some rest & enjoy tea or coffee.  You will be served dinner at 7pm. Bathrooms & running water is available for showers.

Day 3:Mandara Huts (2,740 m/9,000 ft) to Horombo Hut

Mandara Huts (2,740 m/9,000 ft) to Horombo Huts (3,690 m/12,100 ft) 11 km, 6-8 hrs

Have an early breakfast at 7:30am and get ready for your next trek. Break camp by 8:30a.m,hike for an hour through rainforest glades, then follow an ascending path through heath land where you can look for giant lobelias and groundsels. Continue up into open moorlands where small shrubs are the main vegetation. Stop halfway for lunch, where you can enjoy amazing views of Mawenzi. Arrive at the Horombo Huts by 3 pm, where you can see Kibo’s summit. Rest, unpack, and prepare for dinner. Bathrooms with running water are available.

You may start to feel the effects of altitude here, and to aid your acclimatization, you can choose to spend an extra day resting at Horombo or climbing to a base camp below Kibo’s sub peak Mawenzi.

Day 4:Horombo Huts (3,690 m/12,100 ft)to Kibo Huts

Horombo Huts (3,690 m/12,100 ft)to Kibo Huts (4,695 m/15,400 ft)10 km, 6-8 hrs Alpine Desert

Enjoy an early breakfast & get the opportunity of getting some great photos of the sunrise, to begin your trek. The first part of the day’s hike climbs through the dwindling heath land that blends into a moonscape as you enter the sweeping saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. When you stop for lunch, and later when you cross this surprisingly large saddle, you can examine the summit climb up Kibo that you will be starting in just a few hours.   Kindly note there is no running water at Kibo Huts, be careful to notice any signs of altitude sickness.

Day 5: Summit Day! Kibo Huts (4,695 m/15,400 ft) to Uhuru Peak

Summit Day! Kibo Huts (4,695 m/15,400 ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,340 ft)

to Horombo Huts (3,690 m/12,100 ft) 4 km up, 14 km down 10-15 hours Alpine Desert

Wake at midnight to a light breakfast, and then prepare for your summit ascent. The goal is to climb before dawn so that you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly after sunrise. Leave at 1 AM, switchback up steep scree or possibly snow, and reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim at 5,861 m/18,640 ft between 5 and 7 a.m. Here, views of the fabled crater and its icecaps greet you. Another 2 hours of hiking along the crater rim near the celebrated snows takes you to Kilimanjaro true summit, Uhuru Peak, by 9a.m. This is Africa’s highest point, and climax of your trekking!  After your summit stay, descend back to the Kibo Huts, have lunch, rest, collect your things, and re cross the saddle to the Horombo Huts. Eat dinner and get some well-deserved sleep!

You do the beginning of this climb in the dark with headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers. This is, by far, the most difficult part of the trek. Slowly slowly, or, “pole pole,” and an optimistic attitude will get you there!

Day 6: Horombo Huts (3,690 m/12,100 ft) to Marangu Gate

Horombo Huts (3,690 m/12,100 ft) to Marangu Gate  (1,830 m/6,000 ft) to Moshi (890 m/2,920 ft) 18 km, 5-7 hours

After breakfast and refreshing; descend through the moorland to the Mandara Huts. Have lunch there then continue your triumphant recessional down through lush forest to the park gate, which you should reach around 2 or 3 pm. Kindly tip your guides and porters as you will be leaving them here. A vehicle will take you back to your hotel in Arusha.

Day 7: Depart for the airport or other destinations

Depart for the airport or other destinations of your choice.  A transfer to the airport can be arranged at a reasonable fee. A beach excursion is a better way to recuperate, we can arrange!

Written By Expect In Africa Safari

 Highlight

Expect in Africa Safari, tours, holidays and travel packages will take you to the National Parks,  of Tanzania’s most dramatically located wildlife areas,. The size of the park makes it perfect for a one-day game drive and is notably famous for it’s tree-climbing lions. The travel itinerary below is a suggested or sample Tanzanian safari itinerary – it can be adapted to suite your own personal needs and preferences or to any seasonal changes and migratory animal movements. As with all our Tanzanian Expect in Africa Safari, packages, we have offered you a wide variety of accommodation options – directly impacting on the total safari travel costs – in order to offer you the widest possible tour budget options.

Description/ Itinerary

All our 6-day  wildlife safaris, holidays and travel packages, specifically include the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the world famous Ngorongoro Crater National Park in Tanzania. This specific Africa safari and travel itinerary has been designed for visitors with more time on hand for a longer safari or travel tours. It specifically include the Tarangire National Park and have been designed to offer you a total Tanzanian northern circuit safari experience, while keeping your non game-viewing travel time to a minimum.

Distance: 130 km

Pick up from Arusha and transfer to Lake Manyara national park.
We arrive in time for lunch at the lodge and after lunch do we head into the Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon game drive. This national park is one of Tanzania’s most dramatically located wildlife areas, consisting of a massive but shallow soda lake (covering two-thirds of the park), located at the foot of the Great Rift Valley’s western escarpment. The park’s varied habitat attracts a wide variety of animals, including one of Africa’s largest concentrations of elephants, Lake Manyara’s unique tree-climbing lions, as well as large flocks of flamingos attracted by the algae in the lake.
Main destination: Arusha

  • Accommodation: Arusha at Coffee Lodge
  • Meals: All meals included Drinks not included
  • Dinner /Breakfast

Day 2 – Lake Manyara – Serengeti Plains

Non game-viewing travel time: 6 hours
Distance: 205 km

Leaving the highlands behind, we descend into the heart of wild Africa – the Serengeti National Park – with its endless plains, rolling into the distance as far as the eye can see. We head to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source to this area and therefore attracts wildlife well representative of most of the Serengeti’s species.
We arrive in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti national park.

  • Main destination: Serengeti Np
  • Accommodation: Kati Kati Camp
  • Meals: All meals included Drinks not included
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3 – Serengeti Plains

Floating silently above the awakening bush, while spotting wildlife and enjoying the amazing scenery of Africa, across rivers and over numerous small villages.

We do an after breakfast game viewing drive along the Sogore River Circuit, which loops into the plains south of the Seronera River, and which is good for possible Lion, Thomson gazelle, topi, ostrich and cheetah sightings. The Visitor Centre close to the Serengeti Seronera Lodge and public campsites, is well worth a visit after the morning’s game drive. This nicely designed centre offers some interesting wildlife displays as well as a gift shop selling information leaflets and maps of the area. The centre also has a shop where cold drinks and snacks can be purchased, as well as a picnic area and information trail up and around a nearby kopje. We will enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch at the centre in the shade of the giant acacia trees.

In the afternoon we will follow the Kopjes Circuit, which goes anti-clockwise around the Maasai Kopjes, which usually attract a number of lion and some formidably large cobras. Kopjes are weathered granite outcrops, scattered around the plains, most of which are miniature ecosystems, providing shade and drinking water in pools left in the rock after the rains. This makes the kopjes particularly good for spotting wildlife in the dry seasons – including lions, which like to lie in wait for animals coming to drink!

  • Main destination: Serengeti Np
  • Accommodation: Kati Kati Camp
  • Meals: All meals included Drinks not included
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4 – Serengeti Plains – Ngorongoro crater

Non game-viewing travel time: 4 hours
Distance: 145 km

After breakfast at the lodge do we depart to Ngorongoro Conservation area. We will stopover at Olduvai Gorge, boasting with a history dating back to the dawn of time. It was here, that the anthropologists Drs. Lois
and Mary Leakey discovered the skulls of ‘Nutcracker Man’ and ‘Handy Man’, both very significant links in the chain of human evolution.

We arrive in time for lunch at the lodge and after lunch we will descend over 600 meters into the crater to view wildlife for a half day’s safari tour. Supported by a year round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro National Park supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park, is it’s dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot. We will visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, which is one of the main features of the crater. A large number of flamingos, hippos and other water birds can usually been seen here

  • Main destination: Ngorongoro Crater
  • Accommodation: Endoro Lodge

  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5 – Ngorongoro Crater – Tarangire National Park

Non game-viewing travel time: 3½ hours
Distance: 155 km

After breakfast we depart for the Tarangire National Park. The park runs along the line of the Tarangire River and is mainly made up of low-lying hills on the Great Rift Valley floor. Its natural vegetation mainly consists of Acacia woodland and giant African Baobab trees, with huge swamp areas in the south. Both the river and the swamps act like a magnet for wild animals, during Tanzania’s dry season. The Tarangire National Park is reputed to contain some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. This African national park is also home to three rare species of animals – the Greater Kudu, the Fringed-eared Oryx, as well as a few Ashy Starlings. The Experience

Our Photographic Safari was specifically created to put you in the best locations at the best times of the day for photography. The itinerary has been setup to maximize our time in the field creating images under the best circumstances possible. A long lens is not necessary the lens, uses Nikon’s 80-400mm. KILIMANJARO SUMMIT TREKKING – 8 DAYS LEMOSHO ROUTE

Written By Expect In Africa Safari

Is approaching Kilimanjaro through forest and moorland from the west, crossing the caldera of Shira volcano and exploring the rock formations of the plateau, before traversing beneath the Southern ice fields of Kibo. We make our final ascent by the Barafu route. There are often stunning views of Kibo in the sharp light of morning and early evening. The eight day itinerary gives the absolute maximum possible acclimatization and also gives us an unusual view of the montane forest on Kilimanjaro. Lemosho is a little-used approach route and there is time to enjoy the unspoilt wilderness, and the breathtaking scenery, on Shira Plateau before the convergence with other routes in the later stages of the trip. Our Kilimanjaro trekking trip begins and ends at Arusha

DAY 1- KILIMANJARO TREKKING

Arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and then transfer to moshi for overnight. We will gather in the evening for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance.

DAY 2 – KILIMANJARO TREKKING

After breakfast at the lodge transfer straight to the gate and after completing the necessary registration formalities at Londorossi National Park gate, we drive through varied farmland with open views over the plains to reach the Lemosho road head. We often have our lunch in the glades before starting to walk.
It is an easy day of walking up a small path through beautiful and lush forest. This area has a variety of game, including buffalo. We camp at Lemosho Forest camp (2,650 m.). [2-3 hours walking]

DAY 3 – KILIMANJARO TREKKING

We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. There is a tangible sense of wilderness, especially if afternoon mists come in! We camp in the centre of the plateau at “Shira One” (3,550 m.). [6-7 hours walking]

DAY 4 – KILIMANJARO TREKKING

Morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (4,550 m.) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900 m.), sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below. [6-9 hours walking]

DAY 5 – KILIMANJARO TREKKING

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Ice fields. The terrain changes to scree, with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows, and there is only a short distance to our camp at Karanga (4,100 m.), the last water point on the approach to Barafu, in a narrow valley. There is plenty of time to rest, or for a short optional acclimatization walk in the afternoon up the valley above the camp. [4-5 hours walking]

DAY 6 – KILIMANJARO TREKKING

A short but steep climb out of Karanga on compacted scree with wide views, we then climb steadily to reach the Barafu campsite (4,600 m.) The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before an early night. [3-4 hours walking]

DAY 7 – KILIMANJARO TREKKING

we will start our ascent by torchlight at about 12 a.m. so that we can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zigzags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735 m.), in about five or six hours.
We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach our final campsite (3,100 m.) at the edge of Mweka Forest. [11-15 hours walking]

DAY 8 – KILIMANJARO TREKKING

A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes us to the National Park gate at Mweka (1,650 m.); and on through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village. [4-6 hours walking], after signing out transfer to moshi and overnight at moshi .

DAY 9 – DEPARTURE

Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport and fly back home.

Mount Kilimanjaro 7 Days Machame Route-Tanzania

Written By Expect In Africa Safari

About Kilimanjaro Mountain (5985m)
Mount Kilimanjaro is located three degrees south of the equator in Northeastern Tanzania. It is the tallest mountain in Africa and is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. This immense mountain is made up of three volcanoes: Shira, Mawenzi, and our goal, Kibo, the tallest one in the middle.

Of the famous highest seven peaks in the world, this is the easiest to get to and the easiest to climb. It requires no technical climbing experience, and any moderately fit person can summit the mountain

MACHAME

DAY 1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp •Elevation (ft): 5,400ft to 9,400ft •Distance: 11 km •Hiking Time: 5-7 hours •Habitat: Rain Forest The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP

DAY 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp •Elevation (ft): 9,400ft to 12,500ft •Distance: 5 km •Hiking Time: 4-6 hours •Habitat: Moorland After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather, until the ridge ends. The route now turns west onto a river gorge. Time for rest, dinner, and overnight at the Shira campsite.

SHIRA CAMP TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP

DAY 3

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp •Elevation (ft): 12,500ft to 13,000ft •Distance: 10 km •Hiking Time: 6-8 hours •Habitat: Semi Desert From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP

DAY 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp •Elevation (ft): 13,000ft to 13,100ft •Distance: 5 km •Hiking Time: 4-5 hours •Habitat: Alpine Desert After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. This is a short day meant for acclimatization.

KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

DAY 5

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp •Elevation (ft): 13,100ft to 15,300ft •Distance: 4 km •Hiking Time: 4-5 hours •Habitat: Alpine Desert After breakfast, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

BARAFU CAMP TO SUMMIT TO MWEKA HUT

DAY 6

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut •Elevation (ft): 15,300ft to 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft) •Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent •Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent •Habitat: Arctic Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all they way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

DAY 7

Mweka Camp to Moshi •Elevation (ft): 10,000ft to 5,400ft •Distance: 10 km •Hiking Time: 3-4 hours •Habitat: Rain Forest After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi.
