On this 5 day Winterless North Explorer Bay of Islands Private Tour you will see 2,000 year old giant kauri trees, stunning beaches, spectacular rainforest and step back in time to experience Maori culture at its best with a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
Day 1
You will be welcomed to NZ and met by one of our friendly guides and ‘The Road Trip’ begins. Sights will include a visit to one of Auckland’s inner city beaches, Mission Bay, where it is possible to see stunning Pohutakawa trees. The tour will also take in sights such as Mt Eden, a stunning viewpoint and one of Auckland’s most famous volcanic craters and a visit to the famous Auckland Harbour Bridge to view the exclusive Ponsonby Yacht Club. Tonight serves us up the possibility to eat in one of Auckland’s many waterfront restaurants as we watch the world ‘sailing’ by.
Day 2 Auckland- Paihia (approx. 280km) 4 hours driving time
Today we head over The Harbour Bridge and say goodbye to New Zealand’s largest city to be greeted by Northland ‘The Winterless North’, famous for its gigantic kauri trees, Maori culture and its stunning beaches. En route it’s only appropriate that we make a visit to the Kauri Museum to learn all about New Zealand’s most ancient tree and how its significance has developed over time. We then visit Whangarei, the capital of the Northland region where we can view the stunning Whangarei Falls, known as the most photographed waterfall in New Zealand due to its ease of access, picturesque bush surround and guaranteed 365 day of the year flowing cascade. From here we head north to Paihia, the hotspot of the well-known ‘Bay of Islands’ where we will spend the next 2 nights.
Day 3 Paihia
Today is a day of many possibilities. Why not step back in time and feel like a real pioneer by taking a day or late afternoon cruise on Northland’s iconic tall ship R Tucker Thompson, fishing, golf, swim with dolphins, a day trip to Cape Reinga the furthest northern point in NZ or simply laze the day away on gorgeous Paihia beach. The choice is yours.
Day 4- Paihia- Auckland via Waipoua Forest (approx. 320km) 5 hours driving time
This morning we take a visit to one of New Zealand’s most iconic sites in history,The Waitangi Treaty Grounds. It was here in 1840 that the treaty was officially signed by the native Maori and the British Crown and home to a supersized Waka ( Maori war canoe) with which it was thought was used by the Maori to navigate their way to New Zealand from the Pacific Islands by using stars for navigation. From here we head to Waipoua Forest, home to New Zealand’s most impressive kauri forest and Tane Mahuta, New Zealand’s oldest tree at around 2000 years old! Heading south to Auckland down the west coast through Dargaville we arrive in the’ City of Sails ‘ in the early evening.
