Kyoto Sake Brewery Tour

Written By Arigato Travel

Exploring in the Fushimi district of Kyoto, our guide will take you through the streets of this stunning town to various traditional and modern sake breweries sharing a sense of the area’s 400-year-old sake brewing tradition. Known for brewing some of the best sake in the world, Fushimi’s secret lies in the natural spring water of the area. Because of the water holding less magnesium and calcium than other parts of Japan or the world, the sake of this famous area reaches levels of purity and taste that other areas can not easily replicate. Guests will also enjoy delicious food tastings that go well with sake.

Sake Town Tour, Saijo Hiroshima

Written By Arigato Travel

Saijo is a hidden gem for sake fans.  The town has eight breweries, seven of which are situated along Sakagura-dori (Sake Brewery Street). On our tour, we will take a stroll through the historic streets going from brewery to brewery to enjoy samples of local sake.

Saijo breweries are concentrated in such a tight area because of the “Shikomi Mizu,” the water that is essential for producing sake. Hailed as a “miracle water” with a medium hardness suited to sake brewing, it bubbles under the ground of this area in the Saijo district. What’s more, is that apparently there are subtle differences in the water’s components according to a brewery’s location. Shikomi Mizu is an absolute must for sake.

Our tour begins with a tasting and sake explanation at Kamotsuru. This sake brewery is representative of Hiroshima sake. Kamotsuru boasts an impressive line up of 12 unique bottles. Visiting this spot first we will see many artifacts and learn about the brewing process. Please note: that the sake brewing process in not available to the public in Japan due to sanitary and health inspection regulations.

After our first brewery visit, we will head off to try a local specialty hot-pot dish made with premium sake, called Bishu Nabe, and other tasting plates made with Saijo ingredients. Learn about the history of this tasty dish at a local lunch spot. (bishu nabe must be ordered in advance so please not last minute bookings for the tour are possible but we may have an alternate lunch menu) After lunch, stroll the picturesque streets and go brewery hopping. Tasting rooms are each unique and you can sample many kinds of sake and sake based products.  Visit a local cafe and enjoy sweets and a snack break inspired by Japanese rice wine. At each brewery will sit be able to sample different kinds of sake. If you find a type you like, the brewery shops carry a huge variety for you to purchase and take home.

Super Sugamo Local Foodie Adventure

Written By Arigato Travel

Truly go local! Even in a popular city like Tokyo, you can find hidden gems and off the beaten track adventures.

Tokyo’s best-known spots are worth a visit but getting away from the touristy areas is the best way to really experience the local culture. On our Super Sugamo Foodie Adventure, you can explore a truly hidden gem neighborhood with a 100-year history of food and flavors. Meet some of Tokyo’s friendliest shop owners. Taste special snacks, and enjoy a delicious local lunch. Those with a sweet tooth can also have fun trying a few things only available here. This Tour is extremely Family Friendly, kids and adults will find so many things to enjoy together!

This friendly town is not far by train from famous areas like Shibuya but it is a world away in terms of atmosphere. Sugamo is often dubbed “Harajuku for the Older Generation”, for its bustling shopping streets favored by the 60+ crowd. Because of this, the neighborhood is one of the best places to really connect with locals and soak up Tokyo’s downtown atmosphere of old. Of course, you don’t have to be a grandma or grandpa to enjoy the unique snacks and browse shops with traditional crafts for sale. Don’t forget to ask your guide the story behind the Sugamo “lucky red underwear” and visit Kouganji Temple for its healing reputation!

We will begin the tour with a local sweet treat from a shop that has been in the area for about 100 years! This charming location has a great friendly atmosphere and creates original snacks and classics with a twist found nowhere else in Tokyo.  Next head on to Jizo Dori the famous local shopping arcade where you will have a chance to visit regional shops celebrating prefectures across Japan, stop at a famous temple, and learn about this haven for older Tokyo residents who are still quite young a heart!  As we mentioned, the district’s popular, 800-meter long street is also affectionately known as the “Old People’s Harajuku” in a fun comparison to the Harajuku district’s status as one of Japan’s foremost youthful shopping and fashion destinations.

Browse pickle stores, snack stalls, interesting shops, and take in the local vibe on your way to a favorite spot for a delicious lunch set! After lunch, we will do a bit more browsing and finish off with more regional sweets and snacks.

This is a must-do activity and tour, especially for people looking for a local connection, interesting stories and sightseeing, and of course, Delicious Food!
