Day 1: Arrival

Arrival

Day 2: Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp

Hiking time: 3-4 hours

Distance: 6 kilometres

Habitat: Rain Forest

Meals: B, L, D

Budget Lodging: Machame Camp

We depart Arusha for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trailhead, we eat lunch, then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site.

Day 3: Forest Camp to Shira Camp

Hiking time: 5-6 hours

Distance: 8 kilometres

Habitat: Moorland

Meals: B, L, D

Budget Lodging: Forest Camp

We continue on the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is amazing.

Day 4: Shira Camp to Moir Hut

Hiking time: 5-7 hours

Distance: 14 kilometres

Habitat: Moorland

Meals: B, L, D

Budget Lodging: Moir Hut

We explore the Shira plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

Day 5: Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Hiking time: 4-6 hours
Distance: 7 kilometres
Habitat: Semi Desert
Meals: B, L, D
Budget Lodging: Barranco Camp
From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 5 kilometres
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: B, L, D
Budget Lodging: Karanga Camp
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. This is a short day meant for acclimatization.

Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Distance: 4 kilometres
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: B, L, D
Budget Lodging: Barafu Camp
After breakfast, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Day 8: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Hiking time: 7-8 hours
Distance: 18 kilometres
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: B, L, D
Budget Lodging: Barafu Camp
Very early in the morning, we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most wonderful sunrise you are ever likely to see. From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit. From the summit, now we make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Arusha

Hiking time: 3-4 hours
Distance: 10 kilometres
Habitat: Rain Forest

Written By Best Northern Tours And Safaris

OVERVIEW

  • Machame Route is one of the most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Below is the day by day itinerary for the 7 day Machame climb on Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • On the 7 day Machame route, the trek from Barranco to Barafu is broken up into two days, allowing for a short day just prior to the summit attempt.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival

Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Hiking time: 5-7 hours

Distance: 11 kilometres

Habitat: Rain forest

Meals: L, D

Budget Lodging: Machame Camp

Drive from Arusha to the Machame Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. As we leave the park gate, we walk through the dense rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until we reach the Machame Camp.

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Hiking time: 6 hours

Distance: Approximately 9 kilometres

Habitat: Moorland

Meals: B, L, D

Budget Lodging: Shira Camp

After an early morning breakfast, you will start you ascent leaving the rain forest and entering the heathland moorland vegetation. You will cross many streams and walk over a rocky ridge onto the Shira plateau that leads to Shira Camp. At this campsite, you will be next to a stream and have a spectacular view of the Western Breach and its glaciers in the East. You will enjoy evening snacks then dinner prepared by our Proters.

Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Hiking time: 2-3 hours

Distance:3 kilometres

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meals: B, L, D

Budget Lodging: Barranco Camp

Following an early morning breakfast, you will leave the moorland environment and enter the semi desert and rocky landscape. We continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. We go down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although you begin and end the day at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude is very helpful for acclimatization.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Hiking time: 4-5 hours

Distance: Approximately 5 kilometres

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meals: B, L, D

Budget Lodging: Karanga Camp

We begin the day by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Then we climb the non-technical but steep, nearly 900 ft cliff. From the top of the Barranco Wall we cross a series of hills and valleys until we descend sharply into Karanga Valley. One steeper climb up leads us to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day meant for acclimatization.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Hut

Hiking time: 2-3 hours
Distance: Approximately 4 kilometres
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: B, L, D
Budget Lodging: Barafu Hut
Following breakfast, you will leave Karanga Camp (3959m). The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the trail used to descend on the final two days. This is the last water stop for the porters because there is no accessible water at Barafu Camp (4550m). The word “barafu” in Swahili means “ice” and this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge. Tents will be exposed to wind and rocks so it is important for hikers to familiarize themselves with the campsite before dark. An early dinner will be served so hikers can rest before attempting the summit the same night. Your guide will brief you in detail on how to prepare for summit night. Get to sleep by 19:00!

Day 7: Barafu Hut to Summit Attempt

Hiking time: 8 hours
Distance: Approximately 23 kilometres
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Meals: B, L, D
Budget Lodging: Mweka Camp
Our guide will wake you around 23:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt. During the climb, many hikers feel that this is the most mentally and physically challenging part. In about 6 hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685m), located on the crater rim. After enjoying the magnificent sunrise, you will continue climbing for about 2 hours on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime achievement! The hike down to Barafu Camp takes about 3 hours. At camp, you will rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun. After eating, you will continue descending down to Mweka Hut (3100m). The Mweka Trail will lead you through the scree and rocks to the moorland and finally into the rain forest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rain forest, so fog and rain should be expected. You will have a dinner, wash, and rest soundly at camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Hiking time: 3 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometres
Habitat: Rain Forest
Meals: B, L
On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate and collect the summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel in Arusha.
