Day 1 Further down, this morning walk takes you to the most southeastern point of the European continent. The Vendicari Nature Reserve is a wonderful stretch of wild coastline, sanctuary to resident and migratory birds, and encompasses three separate marshes and a number of unspoilt beaches. Day 3 Today, you walk along a lovely trail immersed in the lush vegetation of the Alcantara River banks. The water with its erosive action created a series of very small lakes splashed with rapids and waterfalls, locally called Gurne. Further along, the river waters wedge into narrow and deep gorges characterised by its weirdly symmetrical rock formations formed when the hot lava flow hit the icy water and splintered the basalt into lava prisms. Amazingly, the gorges also marks the divide between Peloritani and Nebrodi Mountains with the volcano Etna.
Route distances: 9,5 or 10,5 or 12 km, on your choice
Difficulty level: easy to moderate. It depends on the trail chosen.
Day 4 A great route is in store for you this morning. Leaving the Alcantara Valley on your back, the trail takes you to the top of Monte Venere with a massive panoramic view over the majestic peak of Mount Etna, Nebrodi and Peloritani Mountains. The view from Monte Venere is breathtaking and stretching across the east coast and, further down, with eye-popping views over Castelmola and Taormina’s rooftops.

Day 5 Starting from the lovely hilltop town of Castelmola a downhill route with sweeping views over the Gulf of Naxos and Mt Etna, takes you to Isola Bella and Mazzarò’s beaches, passing first by the Saraceni pathway and then along the Fishermen’s pathway. A wander through the enchanting tangle of back streets and ancient ruins of Taormina with the truly majestic Greek Theatre suspended between sea and sky with Mt Etna, as its backdrop, is a classic sight you won’t want to miss.
