Written By Leonardo Gubinelli

123948

A unique and once in a lifetime opportunity to see the very best of Bornean wildlife. Take a boat cruise deep into the Bornean rainforests and experience something amazingly unique. As eco adventurer Catherine Capon says, “Travelling by boat is a truly tranquil experience. At night, you’ll moor up along the river and sleep under the stars with the firefly fiesta for your entertainment”. This trip also includes a visit to a very special place – Camp Leakey. It is a world famous research and conservation centre and world leaders in saving orangutan populations from extinction in the wild, protect orangutan habitats and rehabilitate and release wild-born ex-captive orangutans back to the wild.

Meet Orangutans up close and personal in their natural habitat. This extraordinary trip is a nature lovers paradise, not only that but your trip directly funds conservation efforts at the camp.  Here we venture further into the rainforest where you can catch a glimpse of wild Orangutans in their natural habitat, as well as proboscis monkeys, anteaters, crocodiles, lemurs, porcupines and gibbons.

Experiencing staying on the river in a tradition Klotok

How to Encounter A Dragon

Written By Leonardo Gubinelli

12

Be ready to embark of an adventure of a lifetime; discovering a part of Indonesia with magical sights, enchanting creatures and Komodo Island, the land of the Komodo Dragon. Catherine Capon, eco adventurer,  has seen the Komodo dragon itself and says ‘The deadly, man-eating dragons are not to be missed. At 10 feet long, these giant reptiles, with their loose leathery skin and mouths dripping with to, bacteria-filled saliva, are an intimidating sight’. It truly is a wonder for the bucket list! Experience the Flying Fox island to view literally thousands of fruit bats on their daily exodus from the caves and mangroves for an ariel display that is up there with the best arial displays you could hope to see.

How to Encounter a Dragon is a trip Inspired by naturalist Catherine Capon

“As cold-blooded creatures, the Komodo dragons are more active at certain times of the day.  A good time to visit Rinca or Komodo  is first thing in the morning when the dragons are warming their scales in the early sun.  They’ll be out in the open at this time and  fairly still for photographs.  A sighting of a dragon isn’t guaranteed as these animals are completely wild.  However, if you’re lucky,  an encounter with the largest living lizard on earth will certainly get your heart racing.  At 10 feet long, these giant reptiles, with  their loose leathery skin and mouths dripping with toxic, bacteria-filled salvia, are an intimidating sight.  Even the guides are  cautious leading you around the forest as one was recently killed from a deadly bite.  As cannibals, it seems there is no large prey  item that is off limits to the dragons and some ecotourists are lucky enough (or unlucky enough depending on your point of view) to  see them feed.  Their method of hunting is incredibly cruel.  They’ll bite a deer or water buffalo (often on the hind legs) then run  away.  From then, that deadly saliva will infect the prey and make them weak.  The dragon will follow the unfortunate animal until  it’s too sick to fight back and then feast on its flesh – often whilst it’s still alive! ” Catherine Capon.

Join us as we launch the second ever international marathon in Uganda!

This is a truly global marathon held in rural Uganda, for local causes. The 2015 marathon was the biggest sporting event in the history of the region, and 2016 will be even bigger and better! The community have thrown their support behind not only the race, but also the runners – you! Over 1,500 runners, with 150+ international participants, from every corner of the globe. You’ll marshal the Kids Run Wild event on the Friday – the fun run for the local school children & orphans. You’ll also get to visit the projects we are supporting in the community, see how your new friends live, and party with them after the race. Take on a beautiful – but tough- rural course. Your choice: run the full 26.2 mile marathon course, the half marathon, or the 10km.

Along the route you will enjoy the incredible views across the lush Ugandan countryside; you’ll pass through small towns, fields of banana trees and so much more. The course will be marshalled by teachers and students of Shauku Foundation and CHEDRA’s project, Bugabira Community School – the very kids you are will be fundraising for will be cheering you on along the way, volunteering their time to help you achieve your goal. We want them to enjoy the gift of giving not just receiving. This is no ordinary marathon.

If like many of us you are tempted to join an international marathon but don’t want to rough it when you’ve got a marathon to run, then this COMFORT VERSION is for you. You will stay six nights at the comfortable Brovad Hotel where you can come home at night to find your usual creature comforts: a proper bed, and in the morning a full English breakfast. The hotel also has a swimming pool where you can cool off after a hot day in the sun. After all, why torture yourself when you’ve got a marathon to run?

BUT WAIT! THAT’S NOT ALL!

You’re going to go to Uganda and not see the wildlife?? You’ve completed the marathon of a lifetime and your choosing to simply head home to your day job?? Why not join us on the Monday as we depart on a 4 day Gorilla Experience! A great way to round off your marathon experience. See the best of African wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park, board a boat in one of the greatest hippo recreation grounds in the world, spend two nights in the African rainforest at the beautiful Gorilla Valley Lodge, and spend an entire day in the famous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest watching gorilla families interact in the wild, only a few feet away from you!

African Wildlife Safari & Masai School Project

Written By Leonardo Gubinelli

safari8410312

Welcome to the Masai Mara for an adventure of a lifetime!

This African safari with a difference, welcomes you to a luxury safari camp in the Masai Mara. The base camp for you to set off daily on a wildlife safari.  You will come within touching distance (of course don’t touch they bite!) of amazing African animals most of us only see in zoos or on TV screens. Marvel at the majestic African elephant, watch lions and cheetahs hunt their prey, see a vast number of wildebeests, zebras, giraffes and many more indigenous African animals.

This is no ordinary African safari experience as you will be part of an exclusive group to witness the opening of the very first girls’ secondary school in the Masai Mara, Kenya.  Established by Educate the Children (ETC), a UK-based education charity, the school aims to empower the local girls by providing them with secondary education, an opportunity that is not possible for them – until now.

The region currently has 47 primary schools and no secondary schools. Previously, people from the Masai could find employment without education. Today, under the new Constitution people are required to possess a school certificate in order to obtain any kind of formal employment. So for people that don’t attend school, they have no hope in finding a job and will remain in the cycle of poverty.

You may be asking why is it only a girls secondary school? Well, ETC undertook a survey and their findings were shocking. Only 20% of Masai’s are employed in the surrounding tourist camps, of that only 2% are women. Girls will start to drop at the end of primary school due to a number of reasons – secondary schools are too far away and transport costs are high, boys are favoured to continue their studies, girls will help run the household. The school plans to educate at least 1000 girls over the next 10 years!

You will not only be witness to such a remarkable occasion but you will get to explore the wonders of Kenya.

Please Note: you can add extra services and additional costs, to enhance your journey and your stay. These include;

·         Pick up from Nairobi airport and drop off

·         Stay in Nairobi hotel overnight

·         Stay in Safari camp for extra nights

·         Extend your stay and travel onto Uganda to visit the Gorillas!

·         Hot air balloon safari over the Mara

Please email info@inspiredescapes.com if you wish to book optional extras to the current itinerary and enhance your experience!

For those who cannot join us in February we will be having another trip at the end of May. It will be exactly the same itinerary except instead of attending the school launch you will spend a day at the school interacting with the students and seeing the progress of the school!

Borneo Active

Written By Leonardo Gubinelli

168729

Conquer Mt Kinabalu, witness Orangutan in the wild, hop on a river safari, involve yourself in rebuilding homes for local tribes, and fall sleep to the sounds of the rainforest.

This is the kind of adventure that beats you with one hand and soothes you with the other. The climb to the summit of Mount Kinabalu, peaking at 13,435 ft. will test your strength, spirit and sometimes even your sanity. But rest assured, the view at sunrise will reside in your memory long after the bites and bruises have disappeared. The wildlife in Borneo is as exotic as it is wild. We will take you to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre to meet the Pongo Pygmaeus, which is the species of Orangutan native to the island. You’ll observe them during their happiest – feeding time – but also learn about the dangers they face from deforestation, palm oil plantations and hunters.

This centre is world famous, and seeing how lovingly these animals are cared for gives hope for the sustainability of their future. Hope is a central part of this Borneo adventure. You will experience that first-hand as we join Habitat for Humanity in a dynamic community project to build homes for local tribes in Borneo.

No great adventure is complete without time to reflect, and Borneo offers plenty of opportunity for that. This experience also allows you to sit back as we take the reins, taking you on a leisurely river safari down the Kinabatangan River to Sukau. Spot proboscis monkeys, wild orangutans, hornbills in flight, and if you’re lucky, get close to the elusive pygmy elephants of the island. Rest and relax at a wonderful award-winning eco-lodge on the banks of the great river with the ancient rainforest of Borneo as your backyard.

You will stay at a 4 star hotel in Kota Kinabalu. In Kinabatangan, you will sleep in the award-winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge along Sabah’s longest river. And at the project, you will be staying at Horizon Hotel.

Mt Kilimanjaro Machame Route

Written By Leonardo Gubinelli

Summit the famous Mt Kilimanjaro, support a local literacy project

This is the alternative Mount Kilimanjaro experience. Not only will you summit one of the world’s most iconic mountains, but you will get the chance to take part in a local literacy project at the foothills of the mountain. 1000’s of people every year use the great Kilimanjaro climb as a way of fundraising for overseas charities. 1000’s of starving children and marginalised families witness this on a daily basis. At the foothills of Kilimanjaro lie local schools desperately in need of help, where many 14 year-olds still cannot read or write. We plan to reinvent these rural schools and turn them into desirable and successful places. On top of your charity of choice, why not join us and fundraise for the people of the mountain.

You will climb Mt Kilimanjaro via the Machame route. This is the most popular route up the mountain. It’s shorter than some and can be more difficult with steeper paths and less time to acclimatise. However, this shouldn’t be a problem for people who are in shape and have some hiking experience.

How To Teach Youth In Rural Thailand

Written By Leonardo Gubinelli

123745

The Surin Teaching program is an exciting opportunity to experience life in a rural Thai school.

You will be supported by a bilingual coordinator and working in small groups you will plan and teach English lessons for students’ aged 5 -16. The majority of your teaching will be done at primary schools for children aged 5-12. Your coordinator will give you full details of your timetable and school location during orientation.

English is a very important subject in Thai schools and forms part of the core curriculum. Children who develop their English language skills have a huge advantage moving into higher education or finding employment.  Historically the Thai school system puts emphasis on complex and often impractical grammar exercises. Today, Thai schools are now appreciating the contribution of native English speaking teachers as the focus shifts towards communication. Many rural schools do not have the funding to hire full-time English speakers so they are very grateful for all the support from volunteers. In exchange, you will have a memorable time learning about rural Thai culture as well spending time with some great children.

The focus of your classes will be communication and encouraging the children to have fun learning English.  You will be responsible for planning your own lessons and will be provided a range of topics as suggestions including animals, colours, numbers and the world around us. Don’t worry you’ll have plenty of time to get prepared and will be given advice and lesson materials to help you with your planning.
