Day 2:                     Nairobi to Samburu

After an early breakfast, drive north of Nairobi up the Great Rift Valley to the Samburu/Buffalo Springs National Reserve arriving in time for a late lunch at the Ashnil Samburu Camp which features 24 tents. The tents are widely spaced along the banks of the Uwaso Nyiro River, surrounded by doum palms and acacia trees. The main guest area, also shaded by a canopy of acacia trees, offers a comfortable reception and lounge, a spacious dining room, atmospheric bar and a broad deck, which offers unparalleled game-viewing across the wide reaches of the Uwaso Nyiro River, which is the lifeblood of this otherwise arid northern region. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3:                     On safari in Samburu

Enjoy a full day on safari in Samburu (morning and afternoon game drives). In the evening, there is an option of sundowners before dinner in the central dining room.

A place of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, Samburu National Reserve lies on the fringes of the vast and arid desert once known as the Northern Frontier District, whose heat-scorched scrublands extend all the way to the jade-green waters of Lake Turkana and beyond. Physically dramatic, the 104 sq km landscape of the Reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red table mountain known as Ololokwe.

Day 4:                     Samburu to Ol Pejeta

Leave the camp after breakfast and travel south to Nanyuki and check-in to Sweetwaters Tented Camp. A sheltered oasis, clustered around a water hole and set in the pristine calm of the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sweetwaters offers a charming blend of under-canvas ambiance and safari luxury. Located on the plains of Mount Kenya, the camp features thirty-nine luxury tents, each with its own private veranda overlooking the water hole. The central Rhino Restaurant, housed in the former manager’s house of this once colonial farm offers both regional and international cuisine. Also within the house is the Kashoggi Bar and lounge, which centers on a blazing log fire. The Waterhole Bar, built in the style of a game-viewing hide, overlooks the waterhole and offers unrivalled wildlife-watching.

Day 5:                     Ol Pejeta to Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, drive south to Lake Naivasha in time for lunch at the charmingly located Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge. The lodge stands in 120 acres of lakeside land, most of which is covered in green riparian meadows, which sweep down to the shores of the lake, one of the most beautiful in the Great Rift Valley. A jetty has been built out onto the lake, from where guests can watch the antics of the hippos in the lake and experience 360 degree views, which include Crescent Island, Mount Longonot, the Mau Escarpment and the misty outline of the Aberdares. The grounds are alive with a colourful selection of birds, and the trees with monkeys.

Afternoon crescent Island walk.

About Lake Naivasha

A freshwater lake, the highest of the string of lakes that glitter down the vast trench of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha is infamous for its rapidly shifting moods. Enigmatic, and dotted with floating islands of Nile cabbage (water hyacinth) and papyrus, Lake Naivasha has no known outlet, and legends abound regarding the vast tunnels that supposedly run beneath its surface. Towered over by the brooding bulk of Mount Longonot (2,776 m), and featuring a submerged volcanic crater known as Crescent Island, this beautiful lake is best known for its high numbers of water birds. Also for the haunting cry of the fish eagles, which feed on the black bass and tilapia of its waters.

Day 6:                     Lake Naivasha to the Masai Mara

Leaving the lodge after breakfast, continue up the floor of Rift to arrive in the famous Masai Mara National Reserve, and at the Ashnil Mara Camp in time for a late lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy your first game-drive in the Mara. Returning to the camp, enjoy some relaxation on your private veranda, sundowners and dinner in the central restaurant.

Day 7:                     On safari in the Mara

Spend all day on safari in the reserve with morning and afternoon game drives and breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lodge. When it comes to game-viewing, there is nowhere in Africa richer in wildlife or more eventful in encounters than the Mara. A pristine wilderness of haunting beauty, it promises its visitors a profusion of wildlife, prolific bird life and the unprecedented opportunity of catching up with all the members of the ‘Big Five’ in one morning.

8 DAYS KENYA LUXURY SAFARI

Written By Isaac Okumu

Day 1: Nairobi

While you are in the care of Royal Private Safaris, your safety and security are our number one priority. As such, in the unlikely event of serious illness or injury, all our clients are covered by “Flying Doctors” Insurance policy. This emergency evacuation insurance covers the cost of the evacuation flight back to Nairobi for treatment.  This insurance policy however DOES NOT cover the cost of any medical treatment received. We highly recommend travel insurance for full coverage.

A privately driven vehicle will provide you with a transfer to and from the airport.

Accommodation: Crowne Plaza Nairobi

Day 2: Nairobi – Samburu

This morning you’ll meet up with your guide and head off to Samburu National park. The drive from the urban center of Nairobi, through the fertile highlands, the semi-arid frontier of Kenya is breath-taking and a great way to see the countryside. The drive will be about  5 to 6 hours, arriving in time for lunch.

Your skilled guide will take you on an afternoon game-viewing drive through the sandy Samburu desert region.

Accommodation: Samburu Sopa Lodge

Day 3: Samburu

Early this morning you’ll meet up with your guide for your game drive. One of the amazing things about Samburu is that you’ll most likely see species that are unique to this region. The Grévy’s zebra (Equus grevyi), also known as the imperial zebra, is the largest species of zebra. It is found in the Samburu area as well as parts of Ethiopia. Compared to other zebras, it is taller, has larger ears, and its stripes are narrower. Grévy’s zebra is considered endangered, partly due to hunting for its skin, which fetches a high price on the world market. It also suffers habitat destruction, human disturbances at water holes and competition with domestic grazing animals. There are estimated to be 17.000 Grévy’s zebra still living in the wild. With luck, you’ll see some today!

Another species unique to the Samburu region is the gerenuk. With luck, you’ll see some while on your game drive. It’s amazing to watch them stand on their hind legs to eat! The gerenuk (also known as Waller’s gazelle) is a long-necked species of antelope found in dry bushy shrub and steppe in East Africa. The word gerenuk comes from the Somali language, meaning “giraffe-necked”, and leads to its other common name, the giraffe-necked antelope.

Accommodation: Samburu Sopa Lodge

Day 4: Samburu – Laikipia

This morning you will leave Samburu and drive to Laikipia. Along the way you will see amazing scenery as you drive through rural Kenya, spot Samburu villages and more as you drive. This drive takes about 2 hours.

You will have the option of visiting the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary today. The sanctuary is the only place in Kenya where this highly endangered and remarkably intelligent species can be seen.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary opened in 1993 in a negotiated agreement between the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Jane Goodall Institute. Here the animals are carefully nursed back to health and integrated into families. The chimpanzees live in two large groups separated by the Ewaso Nyiro River. Watch them romp and play, visit the local shop, or even sponsor a chimp!

Visitors to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy have free access to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which is open daily from 9:00am to 10:30am and 3pm to 4:30pm.

Accommodation: Sweetwaters Serena

Head out this afternoon, accompanied by an experience tracker-guide, on an exciting game viewing adventure.  Search some of the area`s wildlife hot-spots determined by your guide, as they`ve learned and now understand the games daily routines through tracking.  Some wildlife is more difficult than others to spot, for instance the Leopard.  These spotted cats blends almost seamlessly into the tall grass and shrubbery, and are even more challenging to spot up in their favorite hangout, the trees.  Your guide will take you to nearby watering holes, where on a hot day, you`ll spot many bird and wildlife species, including the elusive Leopard.

Accommodation: Mara Sopa Lodge

Day 7: Masai Mara

The famed Masai Mara Game Reserve was named after the indigenous inhabitants of this land, the Maasai, and the provider of life to the area, the Mara River.  Game viewing is almost guaranteed at some point along the Mara River, and your experienced tracker-guide will know all the best spots to go to maximize this chance to see some of the many bird and wildlife species here.  Have your camera handy, as some amazing photo opportunities will present themselves from elephants on the riverbanks to hippos in shallow water. Lunch either at the Lodge or at the Picnic site.

On today’s afternoon game drive, the choice is up to you: search for the Big 5 or expand your horizons to discover something different. Masai Mara not only has a rich mix of animals – it also has an incredible array of bird life with almost 450 different species.

Accommodation: Mara Sopa Lodge

6 DAYS 5 NIGHTS STANDARD/ BUDGET SAFARI IN KENYA.

Written By Isaac Okumu

This special package takes you through 3 of Kenya’s celebrated wildlife Sanctuaries – Amboseli, Lake Naivasha and the Masai Mara. The tour starts out with a drive to the Amboseli National Park; Kenya’s “Elephant Country”. Famous for its large herds of elephant, Amboseli sits pretty at the lower slopes of the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro. From Amboseli, the tour heads on to Lake Naivasha. The lake and its surrounds are rich in natural bounty, and the fertile soils and water supply have made this one of Kenya’s prime agricultural regions. Much of the lake is surrounded by forests of the yellow barked Acacia Xanthophlea, known as the yellow fever tree. These forests abound with bird life, and Naivasha is known as a world class birding destination. The waters of the lake draw a great range of game to these shores. Giraffes wander among the acacia, Buffalo wallow in the swamps and Colobus monkeys call from the treetops while the Lakes large hippo populations sleep the day out in the shallows. The tour culminates with a safari to the Masai Mara Game Reserve; the site of one of the most spectacular phenomenon of the natural world – The Great Annual Wildebeest Migration. Feted as one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”, this cross border event, is one of the last great migrations, and a unique world heritage. The Mara is Kenya’s most famous and finest game sanctuary. In the months of June and July each year, the wildebeests in their troops arrive at the Kenyan border, ready to cross the steep banks of the broad and fast flowing Mara River. This crossing is truly the greatest episode of the entire migration. Hot on their heels are the predators of the savannah – lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena and vultures. The banks of the Mara River provide one of the best vantage points to witness the drama. The Mara also offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe: over 450 species of animals have been recorded here. You will most likely see the Big Five – lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard, and elephant. Not to mention numerous plain animals.
