Dubrovnik, the war story

Written By Vesna Lukic

1991 was the worst year in history for the city of Dubrovnik. That was the first time ever the city was attacked and although it was severely damaged it’s beauty never left it. One of the most important dates of 1991 was St Nicola’s day, December 6th, when the city was bombed for more than 10 hours continously. That was also the day when Croatian army stopped the enemy army on their way to conquer the Mediterranean jewel. The symbol of the war and the defense stands still on top of the hill Srdj, fort Imperial. This tour we will start with cable car ride to the top of the hill where we will visit the War Museum. Don’t forget the handkerchiefs because what you will see up there is emotional, but what brings the tears even better is the moment you leave the museum and the tour takes you to the panoramic lookout above the town and you realize the city was brought up from the ashes just like a Phoenix would do.

Tour will take us back to the city center where we will take a stroll down the narrow streets of Dubrovnik and I will tell you the story on how the life was under the siege.

Montenegro Tour

Written By Vesna Lukic

With a population of a smaller European’s city suburb (650.000), Montenegro is an enchanting little country full of extreme geographical diversities.

Great mountains with snow peaks, steep fiord-like hills almost vertically diving into the Adriatic sea, mountain lakes full of fish, mystical monasteries carved in the solid rock, sandy and sunny beaches that go on for miles alongside the coast….

Tour starts by driving South alongside Adriatic coast to the border with Montenegro. As we cross the border and drive alongside the Kotor bay we enter the Bay of Kotor, one of the most enchanting bays in Europe. Our first stop will be in Perast where we will take the boat to take us to one of two small islets, Lady of the Rocks or Gospa od Škrpjela. Small, artificial islet with the great story. At the very bottom of the bay, well protected by high mountains lies the city of Kotor.

Upon arrival to Kotor we will meet our local guide who will take us for a stroll down the narrow streets and tell us the stories about the palaces and churches. After the visit do not skip the visit to the open air market that will amaze you with the colors, smells and great taste of whatever you decide to try.

Our next visit will be to Budva – one of the oldest cities in the whole Adriatic, with charming 16. ct. Center, and marina for megayachts – today being top tourist destination for younger travelers with all the fun it offers.

Dubrovnik Jewish Heritage Tour

Written By Vesna Lukic

Despite the small size of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the synagogue of Dubrovnik has global significance and was the central part of Jewish heritage in Dubrovnik throughout the history. The second oldest still active synagogue in Europe (after the one in Prague), it was established in 1408 and its present interior dates from 1652.

The first Jew mentioned in Dubrovnik documents in 1326 was a doctor. Already in the beginning of the 15th century, Jews can take residence in Dubrovnik, but following the 1492 expulsion from Spain, the Jewish immigrants quickly established themselves as merchants dealing in fabrics, silk, wool, leather, and spices. Ultimately, this lead to a decision of the Republic government from 1546, establishing the Jewish ghetto in one street in the Old Town, today called Zudioska street. In ghetto times, the alley was closed at the top and controlled by a gate at the lower end, neither of which exists today.

By 1614 the Jews of Dubrovnik were so much a part of the life of Dubrovnik that the Senate gave concessions to encourage them to live here permanently. Less than a decade later, however, the increased pressure from the Catholic Church and the changing sentiments of the local population had reduced the Jewish population to just four families. Today there are only a handful of Jews still living here and the synagogue is mostly a museum – but from time to time prayer services are still held by visiting rabbis.

We will start our special tour in front of Onofrio’s fountain and continue along the main street Stradun, towards Zudioska (Jewish) Street where the Jewish community once lived. Then we will visit the synagogue and its remarkably well-preserved and historically significant interior, together with a small but remarkable Jewish museum, holding precious 13th and 14th century Torahs and many valuable documents related to the history of Jews in Dubrovnik. After the visit to the Synagogue and the Jewish museum, the tour continues with exploring the magnificent cultural heritage of Dubrovnik and tells the story of the historically significant Jewish community and the time they lived in.
