Beng Mealea to Koh Ker to Preah Vihear (2 Day 1Night)
Written By Admin
Beng Mealea, the titan of temples, a slumbering giant that was lost for centuries in the forests of Cambodia. It is the most accessible of Angkor’s lost temples, a mirror image of Angkor Wat, but utterly consumed by the voracious appetite of nature. The history of Cambodia is rife with dynastic spats and political intrigue. One of the most memorable came in the 10th century when Jayavarman IV (928-942) fell out with his family, stormed off to the northwest and established the rival capital of Koh Ker. Preah Vihear temple, which sits on top of a 700-meter-hight cliff, Preah Vihear, drops sharply down to the Cambodian plains to the South. Climbing up from the base of the hill and the border via an ancient stair way will leave you out of breath, but let you appreciate the amazing location all the more. You are offered the most breathtaking views in Cambodia from this Hindu Temple. The temple was probably built during the reign of Soryavarman I (1010 – 1050).
For this 2 days tour, we begin our trip to the lost temple of Beng Mealea, the titan of temples, a slumbering giant that was lost for centuries in the forests of Cambodia. We then continue to the remote Angkor capital of Koh Ker. One of the most memorable came in the 10th century when Jayavarman IV (928-942) fell out with his family, stormed off to the northwest and established the rival capital of Koh Ker. We then visit the vast Prasat Thom, a seven-storey step pyramid, more Mayan than Khmer, with commanding views over the surrounding forest. Nearby is Prasat Krahom or Red Temple, named after the pinkish Banteay Srei-style stone from which it is built.
Following our temple visit, we travel to a village near by the site of Preah Vihear where we stop for the night at a local guest house. Next morning, we rise early to explore the Preah Vihear temple, which sits on top of a 700-meter-hight cliff, Preah Vihear.
After spending time exploring the temple we take lunch and then return back to Siem Reap. Travelling in Cambodia always throughs up beautiful scenery and many surprises.
