This tour is a self-drive camping holiday, visiting all of the Namibian highlights!

It includes a visit to the Waterberg, the world renowned Etosha National Park, the UNESCO world heritage site at Twyfelfontein, the summer playground at Swakopmund,  the world famous sand dunes in the oldest desert on Earth at Sossusvlei, the Germanic harbour town of Luderitz, the second largest conyon in the world at Fish River Canyon and the largest sand sea in the Kalahari.

The Self-drive camping safari inclusive of zero excess 4×4 air-conditioned double cab vehicle, camping equipment hire, camping fees, 4 nights accommodation, route map & 24 hour support.

Day 1: Windhoek

Land in Windhoek, here you will be met by a transfer driver holding a sign in the arrivals hall who will escort you to the city centre.  A representative of ATI will meet you here to hand over your vouchers, road map and itinerary and to answer any last minute questions you may have.  Your hire vehicle will be delivered this afternoon.  Rivendell Guest House is located in a quiet suburb close to the city centre and has just ten guest rooms.  Relax around the swimming pool or lounge area, and maybe take the afternoon to explore the shops and restaurants of the city.  Facilities include satellite TV lounge, swimming pool, self-catering kitchen, small bar, internet & guest phone and safe parking.  Breakfast included.

Day 2: Waterberg

Your 4×4 hire vehicle will be delivered to Rivendell this morning.  This area is dominated by an impressive, sandstone plateau with many self-guided walking trails and a beautiful spring-fed swimming pool.  The porous nature of the sandstone allows many natural springs to rise through the plateau, accounting for the lush vegetation, which characterises the area.  Andersson Campsite at Waterberg Wilderness Lodge is in a high lying valley and boasts 10 secluded campsites, which are generously proportioned and shaded by trees. Chilled beverages and meat for grilling are available at the kiosk. The spring water swimming pool close to the kiosk is for our guests to enjoy. Each campsite also has: private grill and tap as well as private ablutions with hot and cold running water. Camping only.

Day 3: Etosha National Park

Depart this morning for your drive to Etosha National Park, Namibia’s premier wildlife reserve. On the Eastern Border of the National Park you find Onguma Game Reserve, and here you will over-night. Each of the 6 campsites has its private ablution block and power point. One bundle of fire wood is provided for each camp site. Meals can be booked at the Onguma Bush Camp. Camping only.

Day 4: Okaukuejo, Etosha National Park

You will stay in Etosha for this night, undertaking self-guided game drives and staying at Okaukuejo in the southern area of the Park. Etosha in general offers excellent game viewing opportunities while simply driving.  The Park is dominated by the vast Etosha salt pan, and many water holes exist, joined by a network of well maintained gravel roads to enable visitors the best chances of seeing the many inhabitants of Namibia’s premier wildlife reserve.

Species present in the Park include lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, giraffe & zebra in addition to many antelope and bird species.  The Okaukuejo waterhole is often voted as the best of all the rest camp waterholes and enjoys an amazing array of wildlife. Animals that come appear to be oblivious of the camp – unaware of the bright lights or the people sitting on benches just behind the low stone wall. The light doesn’t penetrate into the surrounding bush. It creates something of a stage – with the water at its centre – focusing the attention on the animals that come to drink.

During the dry season, you’re bound to see something of interest by just sitting here for a few hours in the evening – so bring a couple of drinks, binoculars, and some warm clothes to settle down and wait.  Among the regulars are elephants and jackals, while lion and black rhino often visit in the dry season.  Camping only basis.

Day 5: Twyfelfontein

Make your way south again towards the famous rock etchings and paintings of Twyfelfontein.  Aabadi Mountain Camp is located in the heart of Damaraland, on the D2612.  Aabadi Mountain Camp has 5 safari tents, and a campsite with a maximum of 12 people on the campsite.  There is a small restaurant, a sundowner terrace with a spectacular view and a small (souvenir) shop. The campsite is spacious and lies at the riverbed.  There are enough trees, so there is always shadow and privacy.  There is a bush shower with only ‘cold’ water (heated by the sun) and flush toilet.  The restaurant is within walking distance; here you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a drink.  Each campsite has its own fire place/BBQ, so it is also possible to prepare your own meal.  Camping only basis.

Days 6 & 7: Swakopmund

Drive onwards to the coast this morning. If time allows, you may like to make a detour to Cape Cross fur seal colony where as many as 100,000 individuals may be seen during breeding season.  Swakopmund itself is a fascinating and intriguing resort town.  In addition, there are many adventure activities such as sand boarding, tandem parachuting, fishing & quad biking which can be arranged prior to arrival.  Please ask us for advice on restaurants, the more popular ones should be booked in advance and we are happy to do this for you.  Cornerstone is located on the corner of Rhode Allee and Hendrik Witbooi, at number 40 Hendrik Witbooi.

Cornerstone Guesthouse is a small, private and peaceful bed and breakfast an easy walk away from the sea and the town centre of Swakopmund on Namibia’s fascinating Skeleton Coast.   Within a few minutes from the guest house you can walk to beaches, cafés, restaurants, lively pubs, Swakopmund tourist attractions and a variety of interesting shops and markets. Breakfast included.

Days 8 & 9: Sossusvlei and Sesriem

Set off this morning for the dunes of the Namib Desert, near Sesriem and Sossusvlei.  Arrive at Sesriem, the National Parks campsite on the edge of the oldest desert in the world.  Set up camp underneath one of the shady camelthorn acacia trees and relax by the pool during the heat of the day.  You may like to visit Sesriem Canyon and then walk or drive to Elim dune to watch the sunset, you can climb part of the way up the dune for a really stunning view across the desert.  The camp has a small shop for supplies, petrol pumps and a bar.  On the morning of day 9 you can wake early and drive into the National Park area of Sesriem and onwards towards Sossusvlei, around 70km from the Park entrance.  The entrance opens at sunrise and this is the best time of day to see the dunes.  Camping only basis.

Days 10 & 11: Klein Aus Vista

Drive via the C27 gravel road south today, through Helmeringhausen where petrol is available, to the small town of Aus.  Klein Aus is a beautifully positioned private farm located on the edge of the Namib Desert with spectacular views from the boulder strewn hillsides across wide open plains.

The camping site consists of 10 separate sites shaded by trees, equipped with barbecue facilities and protected against the wind.  It is situated in a valley some 3 km from the Desert Horse Inn. There are self-guided walks that can be taken on the farm as well as optional nature drives to view the Namib wild horses, or you may decide to just relax in the peaceful surroundings.

You may like to drive to Luderitz for the day where you could enjoy an optional boat cruise, or a drive out to Diaz Point where you may see some of the many bird species that can be found here.  Nearby is the ghost town of Kolmanskop, abandoned to the desert when the diamond mining became unfeasible in this area.  Camping only basis.

Day 12: Fish River Canyon

Drive east today, on the B4 road to Seehiem and then the C12 to Canon Roadhouse, situated at the northern end of Fish River Canyon and close to the many viewpoints over this magnificent landmark, the second largest canyon in the world. If time allows, visit the viewpoints at Hobas and take a short walk along the Canyon edge to watch the spectacular sunset.  Canon Roadhouse is a small and friendly lodge with en-suite rooms, private campsites, a bar, restaurant and swimming pool.  Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and excellent Italian flavour of the restaurant tonight. Camping only

Day 13: Kalahari Desert

Follow the road to Seehiem and then the B4 to Keetmanshoop, before heading north on the B1 towards Mariental.  Approximately 11km after Mariental you will turn right onto the C20 road and in the town of Stampriet, you will see the signs for Kalahari Farmhouse.  Located in the fertile valley of the seasonal Auob River, Kalahari Farmhouse combines upmarket hospitality with a rural ambiance.  There are 12 decorated rooms in Cape Dutch style chalets. Enjoy the serene tranquility at the pool, visit the farming business or join a scenic drive in Gondwana Kalahari Park. Camping only basis.

Day 14: Depart

Return to Windhoek today, a drive of approximately 3.5 hours, in time to connect with your onward flight.
