Caracol Maya Ruin

The largest known Mayan site in Belize situated in the Western part of the Maya Mountain and a part of the Chiquibul National Park. It displays classical rainforest and a jungle vegetation home of a wide variety of flora and fauna, butterflies and birds. Caracol was first discovered in 1938 and later explored in the 1950’s. The largest, man-made structure on the site is the Caana (Sky Place) rises some 43 meters high. Caracol included all level of society from poor farmer to the powerful elite. An emergent “middle class” also constitute a large portion of the community.
