The Mongolian Gobi is home of dinosaur fossils
Mongolia is one of the few countries in the world rich in dinosaur fossils. In the Gobi we have discovered many finds such as Stone age tools, Bronze age memorials, Turkic burial mounds, weapons and coins from Chinggis Khaan era, also Chinese plastic items. The most valuable and ancient finds are dinosaur fossils. It is amazing that 80 million year dinosaur fossils have been well preserved. The Gobi nomad believed that bones were of dragons, legendary creatures commonly known among the oriental peoples. Gobi’s most famous and dramatic sight is the Bayanzag Flamming cliffs, where dinasaur researchers made one of the 20th century’s most important discoveries.
Another not-to-be missed corner of this Gobi desert is Khongoriin Els, a 180km stretch of dunes nearly 200 meters high, named “ Singing sands” for the eerie groan of the wind through the towering drifts.
Yol Valley National Park, yet another natural treasure of the south, is a deep desert valley named for the bone-eating Bearded Vulture, where frozen streams melt slowly in the desert sun.
