Highlights of Vojvodina – private tour
Written By Admin
Our first destination is the town of BAC surrounded by fertile land, beautiful orchards, vineyards and sparkling streams. Bac rose to prominence in the middle ages when it served both as the Archbishop and district seat. One of the town’s major attractions is the FRANCISCAN ABBEY, founded in 12th century by the Knights Templar. It has one of the oldest libraries in the country with books from the 15th century and the remains of Gothic frescoes. The FORTRESS OF BAC was erected by the Hungarians in the 11th century on an islet, made by the Mostonga River, a tributary of the Danube. It was entered over pull-bridges and and in the middle of the fortress is the donjon tower which dominates the former yard and represents one of the best examples of late-medieval donjon in this part of Europe. In the BODJANI MONASTERY, founded in 15th century there are the most unusual fresco paintings to be seen in any Serbian monastery with Biblical characters dressed in 18th century costumes and other eccentric visions. Christifor Zhefarovic, an 18th-century painter, engraver, writer and poet and a notable proponent of Pan-Slavism painted the interior of the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin. The museum houses a printing press, many ancient engravings, oil paintings and religious objects. On our way back to Belgrade we will visit NOVI SAD, the capital of Vojvodina. During a walking tour of the old part of the town and its narrow side streets lined with historical buildings we will enjoy the slow pace and relaxed atmosphere. We will cross one of the bridges over the Danube to visit the PETROVARADIN FORTRESS, which has been called the Gibraltar on the Danube and features 16 km of underground galleries, 12,000 gun holes and 13 gates. At the end we will descend to WASSERSTADT, the administrative center of the fortress for a walk.
