Lepenski Vir, Golubac Fortress and Smederevo Fortress – private tour
Written By Admin
After a scenic drive through the countryside of Eastern Serbia to Djerdap National Park and Iron Gates Gorge we will reach the Museum of LEPENSKI VIR, which houses an exhibition of the world famous Mesolithic archaeological site on the right bank of the river Danube. Its newly opened museum offers an unforgettable experience of humanity’s distant past. We will see their settlements transferred from its original place, their trapezoidal shaped houses, objects which they used and hear about Mesolithic culture and how it changed gradually over the centuries. Based on the shape and proportions of the settlement it can be inferred that the builders of Lepenski Vir had a certain amount of mathematical knowledge. Sculptures made of round rocks, representing fishlike human heads or with fish or deer motifs and with some intriguing inscriptions on them: symbols resembling the coordinate system, sketches, letters or numbers are world famous.
Afterwards, we will drive along the Danube to reach the 14th century GOLUBAC FORTRESS standing on the cliffs of the Danube at a place where the river is almost 6 km wide. We will explore its walls and some of its 9 towers and enjoy a fabulous view of the Danube. After lunch we will continue to SMEDEREVO Fortified Town, the largest medieval lowland type fortress in Europe. Built on the triangular plain formed by the confluence of the Danube and Jezava rivers, the fortress is encircled by crenulated walls over 2m thick with 25 impressive towers, each 25m tall. After the fortress was completed the relics of Saint Luke the Evangelist, who became the patron saint of Smederevo, were brought and stored in the church in the fortress.
