Day Three- Wednesday:
Busy day ahead!! Scarves, Scarves, wonderful scarves……
I will meet you at the Elisa gate at 8.00 where we will head off into the Garfagnana Hills for a wonderful day of wine, walking, olive oils, tasting and long luncheons . We will meet Heather, our guide and owner from Sapori -e- Saperi, local rural adventures. These adventures are unique , especially designed by Heather to highlight local business, artisans and to support local rural communties. Heather will be taking us to a local family owned dairy to see ricotta and pecorino (mmmmmm) made. Sampling of course will be mandatory!! We then head to a weaving factory where they make the scarves for Gucci, chanel, Loro Piana and other International fashion houses.Best of all ( well to me) after our visit, we will be able to visit their outlet shop and purchase (at great discount) the wonderful scarves that we have just seen made. Famished by then , no doubt, we will head off to lunch at il Vecchio Mulino in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana where you will learn a new meaning of divine luncheon. After lunch, a wee wander round and a brief look, if time at Castelnuovo fort. Heading back to Lucca, we will stop at Borgo a Mozzano so we can see Ponte della Maddalena (Devil’s bridge) and if you werent stuffed enough from lunch, we will be stopping at a Lucchese winery for wine and oil tastings. Heaven!! We will return to Lucca at 5-6pm
Evening free to collapse and relax.
(Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tastings and Wineries Tour)
Day Four- Thursday:
Barga delights await us….
Can everyone meet me at the Piazzale Verdi by 8.45 as we are off on the bus to Barga. The ride is about an hour and gives us a chance to see more of the Lucca province and the Garfagnana again.
We will have a wander, look at the stunning views, visit their exquisite church, winding beautiful streets , indulge in a lovely lunch, eat some gelato and then return to Lucca about 3pm.
A little bird told me there is a great enoteca there too for aperitifs!
Late afternoon and evening free .
Dont go party hardy tonight as it is an early start tomorrow and a full on day:)
Meals (Breakfast & Lunch)
Day Five- Friday:
Full on day today.
A weird fact!! A NZ Southland town is the sister city to the towns in the Cinque Terre………..
We will be leaving early to reach the Cinque Terre early to make the most of the day. I will be picking you up at 7.15 to catch a 7.42 train to La Spezia.
We will meet our local guide at Riomaggiore and head off along Via all’Amore. We will walk the trails where ever possible and they are relatively easy so don’t panic!! We may because of damage from the October 2011 floods, still have to catch the train in between some trails. We will spend time in each town and have lunch about 2pm. Don’t forget to bring your water and possibly some snacks just in case.
We will be able to try (hopefully) the miele of Corniglia, Corniglia gelato, the anchovies of Monterosso, Farinata (a savoury chickpea pancake), Pesto is a speciality of the region and Cinque Terre heavily cultivates Grapes and Olives. Grappa and Limoncello is also popular. We will time, permitting also walk around Levanto briefly.
This will be a fabulous day, one that you won’t forget easily.
We will arrive back in Lucca about 7pm.
Evening free to collapse and relax….
Meals (Breakfast and Lunch )
Day Six – Saturday:
Market day today, you may like to wander round and see the markets.
I will meet you all at San Pietro gate at 11.00am and we will go off to the Chocolate Festival at Monsummano Terme for an afternoon of chocolate tasting, a wander round the town.
We will return to Lucca at 3pm where we will have a cooking lesson, starting at 4pm with the wonderful Gabriella, who will have something scrumptious for us to make as part of our final dinner in Lucca.
