BINSAR – was the summer capital of the erstwhile Chand Rajas (7th-18th century). In olden days, the devout came to pray at the temple of Bineshwar (an aspect of Shiva) built by Raja Kalyan Chand. Binsar is an idyllic hamlet whose chief attraction is a majestic view of the Himalayas – a 300Km stretch of famous peaks which includes Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Panchchuli. Binsar is one of the most scenic spots in the Kumaon Himalayas. Binsar Hill, locally known as Jhandi Dhar, rises to a height of 2412 metres and offers a panoramic view of Almora town, the Kumaon Hills and the Greater Himalayas. The region around abounds in alpine flora, ferns, hanging moss and innumerable species of wild flowers.
Jageshwar, a cluster of large and small temples and of the Swayambhu (Jyotir Linga) Lingas to be found in India, is at a distance of 34kms. along the Almora – Pithoragarh road. Leaving the main road behind, one moves into the beautiful valley of Jataganga at Aartola and passes by the Daneshwar temple along the way, Innumerable Deodar trees tower above the grand temple complex. Two large fairs are held at Jageshwar, one at the occasion of Shivratri and the other in the month of Shravan (July-Aug). During the fair people take holy dips in the Brahma Kund (pool) and worship Lord Shiva. On this day, fairs are also held in many other places.
Haridwar: is situated as the gateway to the other three important pilgrimages of Uttrakhand namely, Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath. Referred to as Mayapuri, Gangadwar, and Mokshadwar in the ancient scriptures and epics, Haridwar has always remained a major pilgrimage for the Hindus in India. According to the legends, Prince Bhagirath of Suryavanshi clan performed severe penance and Lord Shiva, in response, sent the Ganges cascading into the earth from his matted locks. It was at this place that Prince Bhagirath’s ancestors were burnt to ashes by the curse of the sage Kapila.
