NEW ZEALAND – WEST COAST- WILD, ROMANTIC, STUNNING SCENERY

NEW ZEALAND – WESTCOASTER, WESTCOASTER – 10 DAYS
There is nowhere quite like the West Coast: a narrow strip of land guarded by the magnificent Southern Alps and enclosed by the tempestuous Tasman Sea. A high rainfall and moderate climate make this a spectacular place to visit at any time.
You will begin by travelling the Arthur’s Pass Highway through the stunning Southern Alps, stopping at Castle Hill to explore the giant rocks. A dramatic change of scenery at Klondyke Corner, when you suddenly leave the dry, barren landscape of Canterbury and plunge into the beautiful, dense beech forests of the West Coast. The area is rich in goldmining history and has Shantytown – a replica goldmining town – with a steam train, horse-and-buggy rides, gold panning, steam-driven sawmill and chinese goldmining.
We will take you on a short walk (about one hour) to the stunning Coal Creek Falls and you will learn about some of NZ’s diverse flora and fauna before travelling the Coastal Highway, one of the best coastal highway drives in the world, to Punakaiki, the world-famous Pancake Rocks. The next day we go on to Charleston (once a huge goldmining town where sailing ships used to bring dance-hall girls in from Sydney, Australia, to the lonely single miners) to Underworld Adventures to go Blackwater Rafting. You will be amazed at the Stalactites and Stalagmites and enthralled by the magnificent glow worm display – like a giant Rainbow Serpent winding its way along the cave roof. This is a “never to be forgotten” event.
The Mackly Range Tour in a Unimog will take you up onto the Denniston Plateau, a wonderful adventure with stunning views. After overnighting in Westport you will go on to Reefton, the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have electricity, to explore the early history of electricity. Accommodation is at the Maruia Thermal Resort and you can swim in the thermal hot pools and dine in the fabulous Japanese Restaurant.
On to Kaikoura and a swim with the seals: this is a very special encounter with a wild animal. A stop at the Mudhouse Winery before returning to Christchurch to sample fine wines. Then a visit to the Antarctic Centre – New Zealand has a long association with the South Pole and the Antarctic Centre portrays this in an informative and entertaining way.
Tour includes: All Accommodation, Transport, Main course evening meal, continental breakfast, All Tours and Guide/driver.
