Oxford to Avebury and Stonehenge stone circle day tour
Written By Admin
No trip to England is complete without a visit to the world heritage site of Stonehenge, this fantastic late neolithic early Bronze age structure must be one of the most recognisable buildings or structures in the world. We journey from Oxford via the town of Marlborough to Avebury the site of the largest of all of Englands 700 stone circles. Here you can walk amongst the stones and get a feel for the effort it must have taken to complete this amazing earthwork and collection of giant monoliths. From Avebury we travel south over Pewsey Down to see one of the renowned White horse carvings and an iron age hill fort, before following the juvenile river Avon towards Amesbury and the historic site of Stonehenge. Next destination is the remains of the settlement of Old Sarum the original township from which Salisbury was born in 1200 AD before dropping down to the medieval city of Salisbury with its exceptionally beautiful Cathedral and close containing the best preserved copy of Magna Carta. 10% discount offered on all Discovery or private Stonehenge tours booked through Top Travel www.oxfordtraveltours.co.uk
