Jerash (visit churches) – Anjara (visit St. Maria Church) – Gadara – Overnight in Amman.
Travel north of Amman to the best preserved example of Roman civilization in Jordan, the city of Jerash. Jerash, part of the Decapolis (the ten large Roman cities of the East) has been called the Pompeii of the East for its unique state of preservation. The city features theaters, churches, temples of Zeus and Artemis, a Nymphaeum and colonnaded streets. Later, Anjara is a biblical city and features on most biblical tours of Jordan, were the shrine of the Lady of the Mountain at the Roman Catholic Church. We travel to Uncertainty exists regarding the exact site in the country of the Gadarenes or Gerasenes where Jesus healed the demoniac and sent the demons into a herd of swine which ran into the sea of Galilee. The three Synoptic Gospels indicate that it was a site where, when Jesus and his disciples stepped ashore, there met Him “out of the tombs” a man possessed by demons (Mark 5:9) whom Jesus sent into a nearby herd of “many swine feeding there on the mountain” (Luke 8:32) – swine which ran “down the steep place into the sea”; at which point those who kept them fled “and went away into the city” (Matt. 8:32-33). Thus the three Gospel accounts indicate that the location was near a port, near tombs (for the men to live in), near an area for pigs to graze, near a town (to which the men could flee), and most importantly, near a steep bank (for the herd to rush down).

Continue to visit Mount Nebo, the reputed burial site of Moses, overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea.It was Herod the Great’s son Herod Antipas (4 bc – 39 ad) who ordered the imprisonment of John the Baptist because of Johns criticism on his marriage to his brother’s wife Herodias (Luke 4 vs 19). During Herod’s birthday party Herodias suggested the beheading of John (Matt 14: 1-12). Continue to Aqaba, overnight as meal plan.
Aqaba (visit one of the earliest churches) – PM free in Aqaba – Overnight.
Aqaba’s long history dates back to pre-biblical times, when it was known as Ayla. According to the Bible’s Old Testament, King Solomon built a naval base at Ezion Geber, just 3km from where the modern town of Aqaba stands today. From 106 AD, the Romans, who ruled the region from their base in Syria, also used Ayla as their trading sea port, until it came under the control of the Byzantine Empire in the early 4th century. The Byzantines appointed Christian Arabs from south Arabia to rule the port city on their behalf.
The Middle Ages were turbulent years for Ayla. In the 12th century, the crusaders captured the city. They built a fort on Far’un Island, known then as Ile de Graye, 7km offshore. Ayla was then retaken by Saladin and the fort became known as Saladin’s Castle. In a counter-attack, the notorious crusader, Reynald de Chatillon, took the island, but lost it again to Muslim forces the following year.
Lot’s Cave – Bethany (Church of St. John The Baptist and Elijah’s Hill) – Dead Sea (free time) – Overnight in Dead sea.
Sodom and Gomorrah were two of the wickedest cities in the world. God therefore decided to destroy them both, but there was just one good family in the city, so God decided to save them. Lot and his family were told to flee the city, but not to look back. Unfortunately his wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt. After escaping, Lot and his daughters hid in a cave where they watched the awesome destruction of the wicked cities. Now the cave in which Lot and his daughters hid has been discovered; or rather in the 5th and 6th centuries AD, a cave was located, which was deemed to be Lot’s cave, and a monastery was built around it. This monastery has now been discovered with some very fine mosaic pavements, with interesting inscriptions.
A rectangular church (or chapel) is located on the saddle of land south of the main site, connecting it with the surrounding plain. It was built during the 5th–6th centuries AD, and was used by incoming pilgrims for prayer and worship. It had a mosaic floor with cross decorations and arches supporting the roof, of which one has been reconstructed. This church was named after His Holiness Pope John Paul II to commemorate his visit and blessing of the site on the 21st of March 2000. Three pools can be seen on the “Tell”. The first one is located on the lower southern slope, dating to the Late Roman period during the 3rd-4th centuries AD. The other two pools are located on the top of the northern edge of “Tell al-Kharrar”. Rectangular in shape, the southern pool had an inner staircase on the eastern side, and four steps extending the full width of the pool can be seen. Pilgrims would descend into the pool to be baptized.
