“ROYAL TOUR” May 22 – June 2, 2013
The Ride of the Kings
The Ride of the Kings, a folklore festival, is Vlčnov’s greatest cultural event, and its significance reaches beyond the borders of the Czech Republic. The original Ride of the Kings ranks among the oldest European folk customs and its uninterrupted tradition dates back to the 1808. The best known and most recent theory is associated with the Bohemian-Hungarian War. In 1469, The King of Bohemia, Jiří of Poděbrady, defeated his son-in-law, Hungarian King Mathias Corvinus, who, in order not to be recognized and captured, dressed up in a female folk costume, covered his face with ribbons and headed for his residence in Trenčín guarded by his company, who had to collect money from serfs to feed him. This version of the Ride of the Kings has been handed down for generations. The largest number of local variations of the Vlčnov garb cannot be seen anywhere else but in this very town, as verified by an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. During the event, adults and children will present over 80 variations of the Vlčnov folk costumes, the oldest of which dates from 1846.
Sunday is the main day of the Vlčnov festival – the Ride of the Kings through Vlčnov, a folk costume parade – Program of the festival offers a chance to relax and enjoy folk songs, dances, costumes, exhibitions or a glass of wine in Vlčnov wine cellars.

This ruler used to keep Roman Empire crown jewels in the king’s treasury in Karlštejn Castle and every year, after Easter, he displayed them in Prague in St. Vitus Cathedral. It is the return of the jewels from the capital city to Karlštejn that is the theme of the King’s Procession.
